Improv Workshops

Online Drop in workshops

In response to the unprecedented situation with the Coronavirus, The Nursery and The Maydays are moving their joint improvisation classes online with immediate effect. We believe improvisation is a very useful way to connect with people and can help us to keep perspective and balance in these challenging and confusing times. We want to continue offering people this, even if the medium is slightly changed.

These online drop in classes classes are slightly shorter and cheaper than our normal drop in classes, but still offer the same combination of pair and group work, and are still open to both beginners and more experienced improvisers.

If you’d like fully online, multiple week courses, fill out this form and let us know!

This taster session is a great introduction to improvisation, giving you a fun 2.5 hours to try it out with fellow curious beginners!

Guided by an experienced member of the Nursery team, you will work on the core skills of improvisation through warm-ups, exercises and finally in guided scenes in front of the rest of the class.

This workshop is a friendly, accessible environment in which to have fun, create stories and characters and maybe even learn a little. Coffee, tea and biscuits provided. (Minimum age 18)

Drop in workshops

A very relaxed and non-judgemental atmosphere which allowed everyone to learn from each other. Lots of fun!

Join us for an afternoon or evening of improvisation fun! We will be working on the skills at the heart of improvisation, such as listening, making offers and committing to your choices.

Each week you will…

  • Become more confident and relaxed, taking more risks and feeling more creative and liberated.
  • Learn the attitudes and ideas that make improvisation work.
  • Find these things translating into your everyday life.
  • Become more confident with people, more creative in your work and better able to respond to stress.
  • Develop a little further into improvisation, meeting new people and working with different teachers.

Every class is stand alone, so you can come along to one, or be there every week!

The drop-in is a wide ability class, so everyone is welcome!

It is ideal for people trying improvisation for the first time, or more experienced players who want to work on core skills. The atmosphere is accessible, fun and non-judgemental and you will find yourself doing things you never thought you could.

Scenework Workout

A small-class drop in for more experienced improvisers, ‘Scenework Workout’ focuses on the essentials of great scenework to help you make scenes that are easy to play and scintillating to watch. Featuring a different skill each week, as well as side coaching and personal feedback, Scenework Workout is recommended for those who have completed the Nursery’s levels 1-3 or equivalent training (a year or so of regular, structured practise). This class does not restrict itself to a particular methodology, but draws on all of the training and skills of Nursery teachers to help enrich and deepen your understanding of how scenes really work. Making Scenes is a deep dive class for those looking to improve their scenework fast and have fun while they are doing it.

Skills taught include:

  • Acting skills and stagecraft
  • Emotional release
  • Character and point of view
  • Connection to your partner
  • Vocal and physical transformation
  • Game of the scene
  • Heightening
  • The psychology of performance and flow
  • Storytelling
  • Points of change

With a maximum of 12 attendees, Scenework Workout is run by some of the Nursery’s most experienced teachers, including members of the Maydays, Impromptu Shakespeare and the Showstoppers. Different each week, it’s a workout for your scenework.

Note: To attend this class, you must have completed the Nursery’s level 3 or equivalent. If you wish to attend, please email classes@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience. You will be given a password that enables you to book.

Elective Workshops

These one off workshops are broadly aimed at improvisers with some experience, taught by a host of teachers, often visiting international teachers.

These classes explore specialised formats, concepts and styles of improv, and are great for expanding your knowledge after becoming practised at the basics of improv.

These workshops always sell out fast, please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Women’s Workshops

Women’s workshops are an open and supportive creative space for women and non-binary people of all ages and experience levels.

These workshops run once a month, and they are stand-alone, so you can book one or come along every time. Each workshop is taught by a different teacher and focuses on a specific area of improvisation, and we have some exciting people lined up over the coming months!

QI – Queer Improv

Come and join in at this open playday with QI, London’s first* queer improv group. It’ll be a fun afternoon of scene work and storytelling. Something that is really fun in improv is play that makes no assumptions about anybody’s identity or beliefs. Come along and play with a fun group of people who see you as yourself.

Open workshops every two months! Everybody is welcome to come and play! Always free!
