Level: Intermediate
The turkey is finished, the relatives have gone home and the presents weren’t very satisfying to begin with. There’s nothing to do now but hunker down under the duvet and watch bad television.
Or is there?
Our Selection Boxes are improv intensives with all the intensity taken out. Just messing around and doing what we love: making things up with lovely people. Four days, four workshops with four different teachers. A riotous refreshing blast of creativity, energy and fun to brighten the shortest days of the year*, they will connect you with people across the world.
Not part of our normal level pathway, these classes are opportunities to try things out, both for you and for our teachers. Some are taught by our own teachers and some by guests. They will stretch you, tickle you and give you the best possible start to what we all hope is a better year. Go on, get yourself a little treat.
Disclaimer: These classes will probably not teach you any improv skills. Though they might.
If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24hours notice (and you will receive a warning 48 hours before the course if this looks likely).
This year, we are offering three different Selection Boxes.
Improv Selection Box
27th Dec – ‘Kids games for adults’ with Jon Nguyen – Let’s start simple. Dumb gams played by smart people. Made up stories, arbitrary elimination and prizes you have to get from your own kitchen.
28th Dec – ‘Watch party’ with Dan Ryan – From the height of TV sophistication to the depths of youtube, any kind of video can be the inspiration for your improv. Watch, and then improve upon what you are watching.
29th Dec – ‘Pretentious’ with Jen Rowe – Poetry, arthouse and other things that are hard to do and even harder to like. Tread the fine line between the fancy and the ridiculous.
30th Dec – ‘A Glass Act’ with Juwel Haque – What kind of character would drink a drink like this? Bring a few drinks along, drink them and find out.
Improv Musical Selection Box (Musician – Joe Samuel)
27th Dec – ‘Words, Rhythm and Melodies’ with Nancy Howland Walker – Work on your musical core skills, and laugh off the turkey.
28th Dec – ‘Musical Characters’ with Cy Barlow – Instant characters and archetypes through song.
29th Dec – ‘Singing Sondheim’ with Nelson Velazquez – tips and tricks of performing improvised songs in the style of Sondheim.
30th Dec – ‘Three fun song formats’ with Lloydie James Lloyd – Formats can be fun! (including the 11 o’clock song and Motown).
Improv Genre Selection Box
No genre knowledge is required for these classes – gleeful inaccuracy is positively encouraged….
27th Dec – High Fantasy with Juwel Haque – Swords, magic, sorcery and maybe a bard singing a song.
28th Dec – Magical Capers with Jon Nguyen – There’s something going on in the high school gymnasium! Evil teachers, plucky teens and the house at the end of the lane. (Inspired by ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Scooby-Doo’)
29th Dec – Infinite Universes with Chris Mead – What if you were still you, but you were also a bounty hunter, a scheming politician or a slime mould? Take one
30th Dec – Ghost Stories with Jen Rowe –
(Please note that although some genres contain strong gender and other stereotypes, in these classes, we are not restricted by those. In our classes, anyone can play anything at any time.)
*If you are in the Northern hemisphere
Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. They will expect you to be confident playing scenes.
Whatever the level of ability required, all of our classes are safe, supportive environments led by our experienced teachers. Please email us if you are unsure whether a class is suitable for you. If you sign up for a class inappropriate to your level the Nursery/Maydays reserved the right to remove you from the class without refund.
