Unsure of what course to take in the new year? Intrigued by a course description, but want to understand a little more? Want to get to know a new teacher? Or just fancy a blast of improv as the nights close in?

Starting in December 2021, our sample classes are introductions to some of the new and familiar courses we will be running in the new year. You will meet the teacher, hear what the course is all about and try out some of the material, all in a quick ninety-minute class.

At only £10 each, they are a bargain. Plus we’ll take the price of this class off the course, if you book in the 24 hours after. That’s basically free improv!

£10 class only refunded on 2021 pricing.

Places are strictly limited, and we anticipate these sample classes selling out quickly. Please make sure you choose the right time on the drop-down menu.

December sample classes 2020

Saturday 5th December

11 am Duos with Chris Mead

Duos are shows with two people. As simple and as complex as that. This course will guide you not in a specific style of improv, but in how to find the show that suits the people in it. Just the two of you, on stage. With Chris Mead of the Maydays and Project 2.

(£15, limited to 10 people)

Advanced (3 years +) This is our highest level of class. These classes are recommended for improvisers who are regularly rehearsing and performing with a team.

1 pm Intro to Longform with Juwel Haque

For improvisers looking to move from short-form games and scene work into longer shows, this course will help with how to be inspired by scenes, when and how to edit and how to create characters that are easy to reuse. With Juwel Huque, a veteran of many shows at the Nursery, including ‘Magicked’, ‘Castles in the Air’ and ‘United’, which he directed.

Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.

3 pm Improvising Genres with Rebecca MacMilllan

Useful for narrative and long-form alike, this course for experienced players will not only give you the opportunity to play in some familiar genres, but also the tools and techniques to understand genre, what it is saying and how to use it. Not an introduction to some genres, but to the idea of genre itself.

Advanced (3 years +) This is our highest level of class. These classes are recommended for improvisers who are regularly rehearsing and performing with a team.

Sunday 6th December

1 pm Musical Improv with Jennifer Jordan

Whether you are a natural songbird or have never thought you could sing, musical improv is easy, addictive and can bring joy and emotion to all of your work. Class run by Jennifer Jordan of the Maydays, Impromptu Shakespeare and Concept – the improvised concept album. No musical skill necessary!

Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.

3 pm Fundamentals of Stupidity with Britt Pay

We get told not to be stupid very young. Grow up. Don’t touch that. Be sensible. But what if we didn’t? Learning to be stupid is part of learning to wonder and in this course, you will cross clowning with improv to stay dumb and delighted by the world. With Britt Pay of Classic Andy.

Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.

5 pm Intro to Narrative Improvisation with Jonah Fazel

Humans love to tell stories and improvisers love to improvise them. We love to torture a character and then lift them up, give them the opportunity to charge. Avoid the traps and embrace the freewheeling joy of improvised narrative with instinctive, bite-sized exercises from one of the UK’s most experienced narrative improvisers, Jonah Fazel.

Experienced (18 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing long-form improvisation and will push you.

Sunday 13th December

11 am Acting for Improvisers with Liz Peters

Acting and improvisation are very different from each other, but being good at one can bring a lot to the other. This course will introduce you to simple, practical techniques to be calmer and more instinctive onstage, bring forth and handle emotion and share the process with your audience.

Experienced (18 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing long-form improvisation and will push you.

(Please note, as these are taster classes, we have a class size of 14 to give the maximum number of people a chance to try things out. This means more time will be spent in pairs and small groups and less ‘performing’ time in front of an audience.)
