Level: experienced
Awed by the brilliance and success of genre improv shows on Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe, and want a piece of the action? Or simply inspired by the idea of creating improvised versions of your favourite book or film – stepping into the shoes of writers and directors to create the works they never have, all in the moment.
This eight week course will give you a thorough grounding in genre improvisation, and the skills and confidence to either play in quick and fun scenes or more detailed long-form and narrative pieces. You will feel able to perform in pieces that are as joyful as they are thought-provoking.
The course will look at three genres in detail encompassing:
The parallel worlds of ‘His Dark Materials‘
The classic ‘British Rom-Com’.
A students’ choice genre, which the group will choose together.
In order to fully benefit from this course you will need to have taken a prior Narrative/Storytelling style course either with The Nursery/ The Maydays or elsewhere. If you are unsure please reach out to classes@thenurserytheatre.com.
At the end of the course the group will have the option to extend for a further 2-4 week bespoke booster, to allow further focus on a specific genre or topic. These sessions may feature guest teaching with a musical director to further enhance your improv and get it feeling really true to the genre
Min. participants 6, max. participants 12.
If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24hours notice (and you will receive a warning 48 hours before the course if this looks likely).
This experienced course runs every Thursday evening from 14th April to 2nd June, 7.30 pm-9.30 pm BST
Experienced (18 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing longform improvisation and will push you.
Whatever the level of ability required, all of our classes are safe, supportive environments led by our experienced teachers. Please email us if you are unsure whether a class is suitable for you. If you sign up for a class inappropriate to your level the Nursery/Maydays reserved the right to remove you from the class without refund.
