Level: Experienced

Humans are creatures of story. We see and create stories everywhere, and they are a core part of how we improvise. We establish characters, put them through hell and see what happens. That is part of how our brains work.

But creating a narrative without losing the fun can be one of the most challenging things in improvisation. Balancing consistency of characters, the logic of the world and the desire for a ‘pay-off’ can make it hard to hold on to the relaxed sense of play that made improv delightful in the first place.

In this course, our experienced improvisers will help you to explore narrative improv in simple, bitesize units. Through simple exercises and scene combinations, you will learn to build and explore a world, letting the narrative emerge rather than pushing it. You will use your narrative instincts, create enjoyable scenes and enjoy the journey rather than trying to fit to a specific structure.

Course Syllabus Includes:

Building a world

Using a genres to explore different narrative styles

Being obvious and trusting your instincts

Protagonists, antagonists and the ever-helpful sidekicks

Scenes that serve your story
