Improv to Writing: Science Fiction and Fantasy
Writing Intensive
The class uses improvisation to inspire creative writing – by exploring Sci-fi & fantasy (which may include dystopian, utopian, steampunk, post-apocalyptic, the fantastic etc. Think N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season to Ray Bradbury’s short stories, Game of Thrones to The Handmaid’s Tale, Arrival to Star Wars.)
In this elective, aimed at improvisers who write (or want to write), we’ll play games and scenes inspired by the genre. Then, through timed writing exercises, aim to come away with some great ideas, characters and openers for fiction stories.
Each three-hour class will include at least one hour of writing time. There will be an optional private document where you can share work with your teacher and peers for the duration of the course and over the following fortnight.
What to expect:
Improvising scenes and games inspired by the genre
Writing for set amounts of time
Coming away with writing to work on in your own time
Sharing ideas and working collaboratively
Min. participants 6, max. participants 12. If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24 hours notice.
