As improvisers, we are constantly building worlds and characters that audiences fall in love with for one night and are never seen again. This course focuses on how to take the improvised scenes and characters that you love and turn them into your own short films.
No experience with writing or film needed and all filming can be done on your smartphone. This is a course for experienced improvisers looking to create their own digital material. What to expect:
Devising and enhancing scripted material through improvisation
Learn Story structure and finesse written dialogue
Master the basics of storyboarding, shooting and digital editing
Materials Needed:
A personal computer for the Zoom lessons. A smartphone for shooting footage. Editing software: Openshot which is FREE to download and runs on Mac: OS X 10.9 or higher, PC: 32-bit versions of Windows 7,8,10 or higher or Linux.
Min. participants 6, max. participants 12. If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24 hours notice.
10 Wednesdays starting 8th Sept 7.30 – 9.30pm UK Time
Experienced (12 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing longform improvisation and will push you.

Teacher
Jonah Fazel is a veteran Character Actor, Theatre-maker, Television presenter and one of the UK’s most prominent improvisers, with over 15 years of performing and coaching experience. He trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and in multiple improvisational styles in the UK and US. He is the lecturer of improvisation at The University of Creative Arts, The Bridge Theatre Training Company and teaches at many UK drama schools and improv companies.
Jessica Mitolo is a performer, director, and teaching artist based in Chicago Illinois where she teaches improvisation and comedy writing to students of all ages and skill levels at The Second City. Independent of Second City, Jessica has trained comedians in over 10 different countries and leads corporate improv and idea-generating workshops where she has enjoyed working with companies such as NetSuites, LinkedIn, and Willis Towers Watson.
Jessica is also a performer and director (and the Education Manager at The Nursery!). She has directed more than 40 productions. Jessica was a participant in LaMama International’s 2017 Directing Symposium as well as The Lincoln Center’s 2018 Directors Lab. She is proud to have directed one of The Second City’s National Touring Companies and to have worked as Assistant to the Director on Second City’s Mainstage production, SOUTH SIDE OF HEAVEN.
Amanda Bigford is a Canada-based performer and content creator who teaches video editing and stop motion animation. She studied New Media Art at the University of Lethbridge and from there went on to study improv and comedy writing at various schools internationally. Amanda regularly improvises with her team SBDI, five friends who have never met in the physical realm. She also created a web series with her comedy partner during 2020, Unfluential: A Coming of Middle Age Story.
