First time offering this course!

The Deconstruction is a long-form format that explores a recurring relationship-based scene through themes, commentary and the world in which it all takes place. It was developed by Del Close and The Family – a seminal improv group from Chicago that included the likes of Miles Stroth and Matt Besser.

This course will explore the shape of Deconstruction with the addition of musical improv, using songs to bring out the rich themes created.

Like most forms, the focus and way it is taught evolves over time, and so we’ll use the original form as inspiration and find variation according to the class.

What can I expect?

Detailed relationship scenes with emotional songs

Identifying theme and exploring that through scene-work and lyrics

Short, funny premise-based and game-heavy scenes and musical pieces

Exploring and developing variations of the form

Who is this course suitable for?

Advanced improvisers (at least 3 years+)

Teacher

Heather Urquhart trained in Physical Theatre and has studied improvisation at Chicago’s I.O theatre and Annoyance. She improvises with the Olivier Award-winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical and is one of the directors of The Maydays. Her duo improv show ‘Ten Thousand Million Love Stories’ has also toured extensively most recently to Texas, Montreal and Karachi.

Joe Samuel is the Director and Musical Director of The Maydays. He is a classically trained pianist and violinist and is one of only a handful of professional improviser musicians in the world. He has directed and played for a baffling array of improv troupes both in the UK and across Europe as well, as playing at IO in Chicago and being the musical director of Improv Festivals in Barcelona, Poland, Romania, Finland, Dublin and of course at the Maydays own festival.
