Level: Intermediate

We improvisers are storytellers at heart. We want to tell stories that matter. We want to captivate our audience with compelling, truthful and relatable stories. This workshop explores how to use personal stories in improv theatre. We’ll go through the whole process – from finding the right stories from your own life to turning them into an original show format. Inspired by techniques from playback theatre, forum theatre and oral storytelling, while also combining elements of improv, this is a fully immersive workshop.

What will be covered:

How to find the right true stories to tell.

From story to improvised scenes.

Adding in elements of improv.

Various ways to adapt and make the format unique to suit your theatre.

Nursery/Maydays Sunday Classes

We work hard to provide a welcoming environment for all improvisers. In order to give space to different experiences and identities, the Nursery and the Maydays have worked to provide opportunities for specific groups to meet, connect, and improvise with one another. Each workshop will cover different topics depending on the instructor. Sometimes sessions will be aimed at particular skills, issues and questions, and other times they will simply be a place for people to come together and play.

The Nursery and the Maydays are constantly working to create programming based on the needs of our current students and the global improv community. If there is an underrepresented group that you would like to see have a workshop, send an email to classes@thenurserytheatre.com

Min. participants 6, max. 12.

This intermediate workshop runs Sunday 20th June, 5 – 7.30 pm BST.

Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.

Whatever the level of ability required, all of our classes are safe, supportive environments led by our experienced teachers. Please email us if you are unsure whether a class is suitable for you. If you sign up for a class inappropriate to your level the Nursery/Maydays reserved the right to remove you from the class without refund.

Closed captioning is available in all of our classes and courses. If you need any information on how to access this in zoom, please contact classes@thenurserytheatre.com

Hon Chong is the artistic director and founder of Funnylicious Improv Theater in Bratislava, Slovakia’s small capital city. It is the only English improv theatre in Slovakia and boasts a small but growing international improv community that consists of locals, visitors and foreigners. Besides improv, Hon is also the creator of Story Nights, a storytelling event and community with local chapters in 7 different countries. Originally from Malaysia, he left the country when he was a teenager. Hon has always been fascinated by different cultures, customs and ways of lives. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Hon discovered that he enjoys gardening in his small flat. He is an introvert so you won’t find him being the life of any party.
