Great scenes are at the heart of great improvisation. So let’s spend some real time on them. Ideal accompaniments to the nursery longform or narrative courses, these classes are deep-dives into particular areas of scenework. They are also great workouts for intermediate or experienced players. Our expert teachers will give you simple, usable tools that can be employed in a wide variety of improvisation contexts. Students will work in detail on a single aspect of their scenes, receive feedback and, most importantly, get time to play, both in break out rooms and in front of the class.
It’s not just a car, it’s a 1983 Citroen Passat with leather upholstery, a custom spoiler and a 3.5 litre engine. Oh, and it was bought from my mum’s old boyfriend and may be the most important thing in the scene. This class will help you to be specific not just because it is fun, but to learn about the characters in the scene and see opportunities for emotional change and development, making your scenes as unique and eccentric as you are.
Adding delightful and productive detail to scenes
Making assumptions, extrapolations and jumps of logic
Playing an expert in something you know nothing about
This intermediate elective runs Wednesday 21st October, 7 – 9.30pm BST.
Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practise and specific new skills.
NB: Our electives frequently sell out, but do not despair if this class has. You have not missed your shot. If enough people join the waiting list, we are often able to put the same class on a few days after or in parallel. So if you were excited, join up and we will be in touch.
(Wednesday) 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm BST
Jen trained at ACT Brighton and now teaches there on a regular basis. Her credits include dreamthinkspeak (Underground) and Fringe-first nominated Bite-size Plays. She has toured with The Foundry Group and played Ero in The Widow’s Tears for the Shakespeare’s Globe ‘Read Not Dead’ series. She is an actor, voiceover artist, writer and teacher, having worked with the BAFTA nominated Treason Show Productions and can be seen as a hula-hooping, crash-helmet-wearing starlet walkabout act for Twisted Dreams at various festivals. As an improviser, she has toured with Fluxx, performs with Impromptu Shakespeare, plays two-person improv (Two Seats Four Cheeks) with Lloydie James Lloyd and once won £2.38 during an ‘improv-off’ in a Ken Campbell workshop. She has trained at Secondcity and Annoyance, teaches Improv for Creative Writing and has two writing projects on the go: a sitcom pilot and a one-woman show about an SF writer. Her recent fringe runs in 2019, “Tiptree: No-one else’s damn secret but my own” have been a smash, with 5-star reviews pouring in from audiences, so yeah, she’s busy.
