Event Details

Level: intermediate

A thousand years ago tomorrow, peasants would tell each other tales as the candlelight grew dim and Darkness begins to wrap them in her velvet shroud. Stories of revenge, mayhem, marriage, love, barrels full of nails, and also talking bits of cheese are all on the table. Absurdist improv? No! It’s improv in the style of the Brother’s Grimm! Not only are the original Grimm’s fairy tales dark and disturbing, but they’re also scattered, surprising, and at times completely baffling. Hundreds of years of passing on stories from generation to generation by voice and memory alone have shaped and warped these tales into bizarre gems… with everything from talking animals, severed heads, anthropomorphic sewing needles, random visits from the Virgin Mary, and yes, fairies thrown in… sometimes all into the same story.

These stories are not neat. They are not clean. They are not safe. But they are deliciously dark and very, very fun. Take a quick deep dive into how to improvise stories in the GRIMM style with Roy and Kaci of Austin’s Parallelogramophonograph – it’ll help take the chill out of the night air and make this endless winter of discontent a little bit warmer.

Min. participants 4, max. 12.

They’ve received a B. Iden Payne for “Outstanding Work in Improvised Theater”, an Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin” award, and several Austin Critics Table nominations.

Teacher

Parallelogramophonograph (since 2005) is an Austin, Texas-based theatre company that loves to make up dynamic improvised plays and theatre in the moment.

Since their premiere in November of 2005, Parallelogramophonograph has been more than just an improv troupe. Fiercely dedicated to the craft and art of improvised theatre, PGraph has held a weekly show non-stop for over 10 years. Early on in their time together Kaci Beeler, Kareem Badr, Roy Janik, and Valerie Ward knew they wanted to do something different onstage. Intrigued by the challenge of telling fantastic fully-improvised stories together as an ensemble, PGraph spent years developing original formats and studying the arts of theatre, improv, and storytelling. They’ve toured the country and the world performing and teaching their unique brand of improv with ensemble appearances in over 45 cities in the US, Canada, Australia, France, and the UK.

Renowned for their theatricality, playfulness, and hive-mind like ensemble, their goal with every show is to push both themselves and the art of improvisation to new and dizzying heights while taking the audience along for a joyous ride.
