Level: intermediate
Great scenes are at the heart of great improvisation. So let’s spend some real time on them. Ideal accompaniments to the nursery longform or narrative courses, these classes are deep-dives into particular areas of scene work. They are also great workouts for intermediate or experienced players. Our expert teachers will give you simple, usable tools that can be employed in a wide variety of improvisation contexts. Students will work in detail on a single aspect of their scenes, receive feedback and, most importantly, get time to play, both in break out rooms and in front of the class.
Do you ever feel like you blend into the background? Are you nervous going on stage?
Does your inner critic give you hassle? Spoiler alert! This happens to us all, to some degree. But it doesn’t have to stop you. When we are judging ourselves we get distracted by our own mental chatter. We are not present with our scene partner or fully there for the audience, so our performance has limited impact.
The key to getting out of your head is to get into your body.
In this session, we’ll understand how self-doubt makes us pull back, yet it is full commitment that truly captivates an audience. We will look at tiny shifts you can make in your body to feel more confident and we’ll recognise how using the fullness of voice and expression makes people sit up and take notice and means we feel more engaged and in control.
Some of the exercises will be done alone, as your own internal awareness is important, and then we’ll bring things together to play with commitment and intention.
You’ll leave with a toolkit of confidence and presence boosting techniques that you can use onstage and beyond. Use these powers wisely for they are strong, my friend!
Syllabus includes:
Stage Presence: What is this elusive thing?
Embodying confidence: Techniques to feel more capable in any moment.
Commitment and expression: How your voice and body can help you command the room.
Min. participants 6, max. participants 12. If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24 hours notice.
This intermediate elective runs Saturday 6th March, 4 – 6.30 pm GMT
Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.
NB: Our electives frequently sell out, but do not despair if this class has. You have not missed your shot. If enough people join the waiting list, we are often able to put the same class on a few days after or in parallel. So if you were excited, join up and we will be in touch.
