Level: Intermediate

Some people still whisper that BIPOC performers “always make things political”. They’ve discounted the microaggressions we’ve faced, those moments where our offers were ignored, or worse, where the narrative yucks our yum. In this workshop, we’ll reforge our boundaries by examining and testing the intentions of three fundamental improv tents: Saying Yes, Statements Only, and Sharing Focus. We’ll explore whether these tenets help BIPOC performers find and play with “good trouble” (John Lewis), or if they reinforce the problems that are always political.

After this workshop, you’ll be empowered to

Say No as the Strongest Scene Offer

Ask Questions as a thematic statement

Reclaim Focus after being silenced or shut down from your fun

Nursery/Maydays Sunday Classes

We work hard to provide a welcoming environment for all improvisers. In order to give space to different experiences and identities, the Nursery and the Maydays have worked to provide opportunities for specific groups to meet, connect, and improvise with one another. Each workshop will cover different topics depending on the instructor. Sometimes sessions will be aimed at particular skills, issues and questions, and other times they will simply be a place for people to come together and play.

The Nursery and the Maydays are constantly working to create programming based on the needs of our current students and the global improv community. If there is an underrepresented group that you would like to see have a workshop, send an email to classes@thenurserytheatre.com

Min. participants 6, max. 12.

This intermediate workshop runs Sunday 16th May, 3 – 5.30 pm BST.

Intermediate (3/6 months+) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills.

If you sign up for a class inappropriate to your level the Nursery/Maydays reserved the right to remove you from the class without refund.
